Little did we realize that the end would come so soon. It is now almost 5 years Peter’ departure. I sit at my desk looking out onto the brilliant blue waters of the Solent, gathering together my thoughts as I write. Beyond, on the opposite shores lie Gosport and Portsmouth and the horizon is tinged with a warm glow of pink. It is a moment in the late afternoon and all is quiet.
Neither the can ferry or the foot passenger ferry can be seen plying past. But before long and before the sun sinks low in the sky, a lone yacht will sail by and traffic will resume including a cruise ship making its way from Southampton towards the channel and the open sea.
As I watch, a thousand memories flash by of joy, of excitement, of sadness and sorrow – a past gone forever, but to remember and reflect upon, reminding me that all is transient.
